Contract

Once we have accepted your book for publication, a contract will be drawn up between us. This page tells you more about your contract and what you can expect.

Contract

The Contract
Once accepted the commissioning editor will then discuss with you terms and possible publication dates. A contract will be issued once these have been agreed and your book will be scheduled into our publishing programme.

The contract will specify details relating to your book that will have been agreed with our commissioning staff before it is drawn up. These include:

  • The date of manuscript delivery
  • An agreed word count
  • The agreed advance and royalties
  • The rights covered by the contract

Manuscript delivery
An agreed date for the delivery of the final manuscript will be included in the contract. The scheduling of the publication of your book will be based on this date and key dates related to pre-publication activity will be dependent on this. It is therefore important that you provide a realistic date of delivery and then inform your commissioning editor of any likely slippage. You will be contacted periodically through the writing period by our publishing staff for updates on the writing progress.

Word count
The anticipated extent is also included in your contract. This is important for us to both price your book appropriately and to estimate its manufacture costs. At proposal stage we expect to look at as close a picture – such as its likely extent - to the final book as possible and make critical decisions about its commercial viability based on this information. Should the final manuscript be substantially under or over the contracted word count we may ask you to rewrite it or, in a few cases, reject it for publication.

Advance and royalties
Our commissioning editors will discuss with you the advance payable and royalties you will receive. Our offer will be based on sales expectations and on industry-standard rates appropriate for the type of publication.

Rights
KP contracts cover the range of activities that we offer for each intellectual property we acquire. This includes our substantial export activity and the sale of translation and electronic rights. We are unlikely to acquire intellectual property where we are not granted a full range of rights. As much as our success in home sales, KP prides itself in its ability to deliver a full range IP activities  - whether it be to sell translation rights to China or to distribute an English language version in worldwide territories or to sell e-rights to the many on-line libraries and aggregators with whom we now work. These range of activities not only provide enhanced exposure for your publication and additional income, but they also enable us to cover the considerable investment made in bringing your book to market.
