How to mark and illuminate your vehicle

Goods vehicle operators have a wide array of regulations they need to adhere to while on the road.

In The Transport Manager's and Operator's Handbook 2009, industry expert David Lowe explains that the legal requirements for such individuals call for lights and reflectors to be fitted to vehicles and maintained in a manner that allows the wagon, lorry or van to be driven on the road between sunset and sunrise.

Moreover, they should allow the vehicle in question to be in service during seriously reduced visibility between sunrise and sunset.

Between sunset and sunrise, there are around ten different types of lights and reflectors that must be displayed on a goods vehicle.

These include two front position lamps showing white light to the front, a pair of rear position lamps displaying red light to the rear, illumination for the rear number plate, end-outline marker lamps, two red reflex retro-reflectors at the back and two yellow or white headlamps.

"All lights must be kept clean and in good working order. It is an offence to cause undue dazzle or discomfort to other road users by the use of lights or through their faulty adjustment, or to have defective of obscured lighting on a vehicle at any time," Mr Lower notes.
