Ralph L. Block, JD, has been an active participant in the REIT industry for three decades, as an individual investor, investment adviser, professional money manager, author, publisher, and consultant. For his pioneering work, Block received the 2004 Industry Achievement Award from NAREIT, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.
He was chief REIT portfolio manager for Bay Isle Financial LLC from 1993 to 2003, portfolio manager for Undiscovered Managers REIT Fund from 1998 through 2003, and is currently a principal and senior portfolio manager for Phocas Financial Corporation, an Alameda, California-based investment advisory firm. He is also the owner and proprietor of Essential REIT Publishing Co., which publishes The Essential REIT newsletter. Before becoming a professional REIT investor, Block was a business lawyer for more than twenty-five years.
