About the book

he advanced textbook for mastering HRM research across functions and contexts.

How can HR research be designed to deliver both academic rigor and workplace impact? Advanced Methods for Human Resource Management Research by Paul Joseph-Richard equips postgraduate students with the practical and theoretical tools to plan and execute research projects that address real HR challenges. Written for Research Methods modules within HRM programmes, it aligns with course outcomes and supports adoption as a core or recommended text.

This textbook takes a practice-based approach, showing how to match methods to different HR contexts. Each chapter focuses on a specific HRM practice, combined with a 'Method in Focus' feature to illustrate how qualitative, quantitative or mixed-method designs can be applied. Students will explore how to research recruitment, selection, learning and development, people analytics, sustainable HRM and employee wellbeing using interviews, literature reviews, Big Data, social media analysis, visual data and cross-country comparative studies.

Structured learning features include:
- Clear learning outcomes for every chapter
- Real-world examples to connect theory with practice
- End-of-chapter activities to encourage critical thinking
- 'Explore further' boxes to prompt wider reading and research
- Key summary points for a quick review of chapters
- Online lecturer slides, manuals and student study guides with annotated links and reflective questions

Whether preparing for a dissertation or contributing to evidence-based HR practice, this textbook gives postgraduate students the confidence and capability to conduct robust, relevant and ethical HRM research.

  • An engaging and practical overview of organizational research methods. The application of commonly used approaches to explore important topics - such as recruitment & selection, learning & development, performance management, reward, employee relations, strategic HRM, talent management and DEI - is particularly valuable, and is complemented by a suite of supplementary online chapters. Whilst this book is aimed at students and practitioners in the field of HRM, its accessible style, breadth of coverage, and range of useful resources, should make it relevant to a far wider audience. Joseph-Richard encourages and supports the reader to expand their repertoire of methodologies to produce valuable evidence-based insights for professional practice.
